The intimate size of YL Restaurant means it can feel cramped during peak hours especially on Tuesdays, which can lead to longer waits for a table. Some customers highlight the challenge of accessibility, noting the restaurant is located upstairs with no elevator option, which might deter those with mobility issues.
While most of the dishes receive rave reviews, a few diners have mentioned inconsistencies in the dim sum offerings, particularly regarding the soup inside the xiao long bao. Additionally, although they accept card payments, bringing cash might be wise to avoid associated charges from card transactions.
A nice little place, built into the shop. It’s not immediately obvious from the outside, and the actual room is quite small and intimate, with it being a bit quiet at times. However, the quality of the food is good and reminds you of food in similar eateries in Hong Kong, offering authentic Cantonese cuisine, with a range of items that are not often on most menus outside of much larger restaurants. The ho fun rice noodles were great, and are some of the most authentic I’ve had in the UK. The xiao long bao weren’t as authentic, but still had plenty of tasty soup inside. The lady serving me was quite helpful and attentive with the food order. Also, they accept card payment and AMEX, just in case you need to know in advance.
What a great place! The location is unusual, inside a Chinese supermarket, but don't let that put you off. Authentic Hong Kong Cantonese food. Decent range of dim sum, noodles, rice dishes, and main course dishes. Enjoyed every dish we ordered, especiallly the fried beef ho fun. Have seen comments in other reviews that the place is small, which is fair. It is not somewhere for a romantic, long meal. It is a great place for authentic flavours and freshly made food. I imagine that it must get very busy during peak times. Service was very good. Will definitely go back!!
Absolutely the best Chinese dining experience I’ve ever had! The roasted duck was perfectly crispy, the dim sum was fresh and flavorful, and the Mapo tofu had just the right balance of spice. The staff were warm and attentive, and the cozy atmosphere made the evening unforgettable. It truly felt like dining in a little corner of China. Highly recommended for anyone who loves authentic Chinese cuisine!
Hidden gem and authentic experience for dim sum; great taste and speedy service. Place is family run and independent; friendly and accommodating. No need to head into London to get that in house made Dim Sum treat when near Reading. Highly recommend giving it a try and see for yourself. It is within a Supermarket, but space is enough to fit up to 30 people in the restaurant. We were in there on a Saturday afternoon and didn’t have to wait, so all good. The friendly waitress also provided some recommendations after asking (fried Cuttlefish cake with Coriander, pan fried Radish / Turnip Cake, minced pork & prawn Siu Mai). Which was all great and would definitely go again. Tips are: -something to be aware is it is up some stairs (with no real option for any wheely devices or they need to be lifted or left outside the restaurant). -they take card, though suggest to bring cash (to avoid the card payment charges passed on). -they have an early bird period (10-11:00) with discount and a late session one for special sets (3-4:30pm)
Great find in Reading. We went for dinner one night and then back for dim sum the following Sunday. The food was authentic Cantonese, well cooked and delicious. I could tell it was going to be good when the menu contained a lot of things that are rarely found on menus in the West, but very common in Hong Kong. The staff are lovely, even though it was busy both times we visited, the staff stopped to have a conversation with us. The restaurant is tiny, just above a Chinese supermarket maybe 6 or 7 tables, the customers are mainly local Chinese, so I'm guessing it's a well-kept secret. There was a queue for dim sum but worth the wait.
Easily the best dim sum I've ever had in the UK, the shumai was exceptionally flavourful. Also had congee for the first time and that was very good too. Whatever the chilli oil was went really well with the noodles. Expect to wait a little as it seems very popular with the local HK crowd. I'll be back :)
Everything is wonderful, we strongly recommend Beef Ho Fun, it has authentic favors, with their homemade chilli oil is prefect. We really enjoyed the homemade Siu Mai too! And the service is extraordinary and friendly. Don't forget to have the Hong Kong style milk tea, gonna miss the taste soon. Would definitely come back
Don't miss the Minced Pork & Crab Roe Siu Mai and the Beef Chow Fun. These dishes showcase authentic Cantonese flavors and represent the best of what this restaurant offers. The fried dim sum options, especially the香茜墨魚餅, are also a crowd favorite.
Yes, the restaurant is a great spot for families. It offers a kids’ menu and a casual atmosphere, which makes dining with little ones easy and enjoyable.
